We have been learning about responding to texts around us using the Relate/Reflect approach from The Thinking Matrix.  To introduce this method, we watched an new ad campaign by Burger King called, “Burger King – Bully Jr“.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnKPEsbTo9s

After watching the ad several times, we talked about the lesson it was trying to teach the audience.  After all, we need to always learn from what we read or see!  We discussed what it means to reflect and relate, as well.  The big learning here is to make sure the students can extend their understanding.  It’s important to identify a lesson but most students can already do that.  What students will be focusing on this year is why the lesson is important to their lives and the world around them.  We want them to begin thinking in a more outward, global way.

6B was out in full force running/walking/moving in a forward direction for our Annual Terry Fox Run.  It was great to see so many kids involved in such a positive movement!  We took some pics at the end of the event for you to see.  I think we need to work on our “Smile for the Camera” talents before Picture Day on October 3rd!

Welcome Back!

Welcome Back!

And here we are, already at September 17th.  I’m late writing my first post this year.  Time really does fly when you’re having fun!  Hopefully what I type today has already been discussed around your dinner tables (car rides to and from hockey/baseball/dance/piano/swimming?).  We are into the fully swing of things in The Cottage.  Our Number Sense and Numeration unit is well under way as we learn about numbers to the millions and decimal numbers to the thousandths. We are madly working on Me, My Selfie and I to show off at our upcoming Meet the Teacher Night on October 5th.  Practice your duck face!  Our first Literature Circle books have been handed out and Meetings begin on September 19th. We are exploring the Symbols of Canada and will be using the Inquiry Process to create media presentations for our Canada TM Gallery Walk in late September.  In Science, we are learning about Biodiversity and how humans impact our planet’s ecosystems (we had a great discussion on Friday about this!).

Many of you have signed up for the Remind App and I thank you for this.  It makes life easier if I can send you a quick message for important dates and information.  As well, some of you have followed our classroom on Twitter.  I like to use that platform to give you a glimpse into what we do all day long.  Hopefully you take a peek.  It is a closed account so you will need to request permission to access it.

Finally, we are beginning our Classroom Economy this week.  Your child has been hired for their position in the classroom and will be receiving a bank account where they will be able to deposit their paycheques and rewards.  We do have fines however so far so good.  No fines have been handed out!  I’m hoping we can keep up our record.

One last thing, we do Scholastic Book orders in our classroom which allows the kids affordable books and gives back money that we can spend on our classroom library.  There is no pressure to purchase however if you choose to participate, we thank you in advance.

Living’ the Dream With the Green Screen

We’ve been madly working on our Literature Circle Book Trailers in The Cottage over the past week.  The kids have been using their creativity, collaborative skills, tech wizardry and acting genius to mastermind amazing book trailers that will be shown at our upcoming Cottage Film Festival.  I’m really impressed with how the kids have shared the space in our crowded living space.  A special thanks to Ms. Szarka in the library for letting us work in her classroom as well and to Mrs. Kitchen for the lend on the second green screen.

We have some fun things coming up at Bellmoore.  Tomorrow is Ticat Day so wear your Black and Yellow and support our team in the post season!  Oskee Wee Wee!

Our Winter Bazaar is approaching quickly and we are still looking for items for our class basket (we don’t have many, folks!).  Our class theme is Host/Hostess so anything that you would use for hosting a party during the holiday season – napkins, candles, some kitchen tools, etc. – would be much appreciated.  Thanks to those who have already donated.ticat bazaar moustache-copy

I’m a little late in posting these pics. My apologies. Last week we had our Canada™ Exhibit in The Cottage. The kids have been exploring symbols that represent Canada. They’ve been using the Inquiry Process to create their own deep questions and learn about things that really interest them. As well, the kids got to choose how they would present their information as long as their final product contained the history and origin of their symbol and how it is significant to Canada. The choice of working with one partner or flying solo was theirs as well. It’s been a fun process that has been very interesting to experience. I learned a lot about your kids. Have a look!

The Thinking Matrix

The Thinking Matrix

Today the kids were introduced to The Thinking Matrix. This is a six-component method we will use throughout the year to increase our skills of interpreting and responding to texts. To begin our journey, I read Stone Soup by Jon J Muth.

We spent some time discussing the lesson the story taught us and relating it to our classroom. I have to tell you that I feel very fortunate to have such a wonderful and kind group of kids.

 

The first stage of the Thinking Matrix is the Retell/Summary component. After reviewing the description of a retell/summary, we talked about sentence starters and the success criteria. It’s also posted in our classroom to help the kids be successful:

It’s been crazy busy in The Cottage today. We started with our Me, My Selfie & I and then moved onto Reading Buddies with our JK/SK friends in room 183 (Mrs Mathieson and Mrs Callahan). Math found us using our white boards to work in groups collaboratively. This was a chance for us to continue our learning around using variables in an expression sentence. Finally we spent time in Social Studies doing research for our Symbols Of Canada inquiry project.
